The NB Media Co-op’s 6th annual general meeting speaker is Alain Deneault.
Deneault, a Quebec author on topics such as international finance, globalization, transnational corporations and corporate tax havens, will speak on “The Halifax Banking Company, the Irving Family and Nova Scotia Business: How the Maritimes Pioneered the Offshore World.” The talk begins on Tuesday, Sept. 29 at 7:00pm at James Dunn Hall, Room G1, St. Thomas University in Fredericton. Jean Sauvegeau of the NB Prosperity and Not Austerity Coalition will provide opening remarks. The lecture is co-hosted by St. Thomas University’s Department of Criminology and Department of Sociology, and the Federation of New Brunswick Faculty Associations.
The lecture will explore how Maritime interests helped innovate the offshore economy of tax avoidance. The amount of money being sent from Canada and the United States to offshore tax havens such as the Cayman Islands, Luxembourg or Bermuda has increased over tenfold since the 1980s, with significant implications for public institutions here and for the global order that Maritime business interests have helped to innovate.
Deneault will be giving another talk earlier in the day as part of a panel called “What companies don’t want you to know: Barrick, Goldcorp and the Irving’s.” The panel will be on Tuesday, Sept. 29 at 12 noon at the Grad House, 676 Windsor St.. Fredericton. Deneault will speak on the legal struggles he experienced over his book, Noir Canada, that shone a light on Canadian mining companies’ human rights abuses in Africa. The book was republished under a different name, Paradise Underground, Paradis sous-terre. Deneault is also the author of Imperial Canada Inc.: Legal Haven of Choice for the World’s Mining Industries, which has also been the target of threatened legal action from Barrick Gold. Deneault will be joined by Jackie McVicar and Julian Walker. McVicar, a coordinator with the Maritimes-Guatemala Breaking the Silence Network, will speak on Canadian mining companies in Guatemala and their influence over institutions in Canada and Walker will speak about the Irving press and reporter self-censorship.

The NB Media Co-op chose to be a co-operative because we believed that it would provide a democratic model for producing, disseminating and sustaining media. The AGM is a time for our members to review the milestones and challenges of the past year and discuss the future of the NB Media Co-op. We will elect board of directors and editorial board at this meeting. Find our agenda, documents to review before the AGM and call for nominations below.

Editorial Board
Our editorial board members take turns editing contributions to the Co-op website, The Brief or other media of the Co-op. Our editors ensure contributions follow our contributor guidelines and they strive to retain the spirit of the original work by communicating with contributors during editing.
As per the bylaws, editors must have worked for at least 1 hour a week for the Co-op for three months before becoming an editor. Don’t let this stop you! If you are interested in getting started on editing tasks for the co-op, contact us as we are always looking for new editors, proofreaders and fact-checkers.

The Board of Directors ensure that the NB Media Co-op fulfills its objectives of democratizing the media and providing a media outlet for under-reported and misrepresented stories, issues and views both online and in print. There are 3 positions to be elected at the annual generalmeeting. The board of directors meets four times a year.
