Professors and instructors from New Brunswick’s four public universities and the Maritime College of Forest Technology have written to New Brunswick Minister of Natural Resources Paul Robichaud to demand that the government’s forest plan be halted and a different course of action grounded in accumulated collective wisdom be taken.
Dear Minister Robichaud,
We in the academic community of New Brunswick are deeply concerned about recent announcements and actions by the provincial government regarding forest policy in the province. Specifically, we believe there has been a lack of proper consultation and transparent consideration of scientific evidence regarding: (i) the proposed Strategy for Crown Lands Forest Management that seeks to increase wood supply by approximately 20% for softwoods; and (ii) the JDI agreement (contract) that commits the province to provide JDI with specific wood supply quantities over the next 25 years. Nous, du milieu universitaire du Nouveau-Brunswick, sommes profondément inquiets par rapport aux annonces et mesures récentes du gouvernement provincial relativement à la stratégie forestière de la province. Plus précisément, nous croyons qu’il y a eu un manque de consultation et de la transparence dans la prise en compte des études scientifiques en ce qui concerne : (i) la Stratégie de gestion des forêts de la Couronne, nouvellement proposée et visant à augmenter d’environ 20 % l’approvisionnement en bois; et (ii) l’entente avec JDI engageant la province à fournir à JDI des quantités précises de résineux pour les 25 prochaines années.
