I found it tragic that in a recent letter to the editor of The Daily Gleaner, a Mr. Hitchens speaks to the fact that “science” is overwhelmingly in agreement that fracking is “safe.” What science?
The government, industry and the scientific community at large are actually in accordance that there is in fact a virtual absence of any peer-reviewed studies on the environmental, economic and long-term health effects of this industrial process. Unless the author has a secret laboratory with a bunch of scientists doing top-secret research in his basement, his statement is both baseless and false.
That being said, the industry’s track record “on the ground” is poor at best–I won’t quote you any of the multitude of independently verifiable stats on the subject, but it’s enough to make anyone upset.
And speaking of upset, what about the Times & Transcript in Moncton no longer printing letters to the editor on hydrofracking? What ever happened to free speech and democracy? How about journalistic integrity? The truth of the matter is, the government doesn’t want the truth about fracking printed for public perusal because it’s losing its public relations battle and that’s great news for all of New Brunswick!
