The Common Front for Social Justice is fighting to build a more compassionate society, based on respect and dignity for all. We want a New Brunswick without poverty, and a province which gives each and every one a decent living, particularly through a decent minimum wage and adequate social income rates on which citizens can live respectably, instead of simply surviving.
For a long time, the Common Front has been aware that social assistance policies did not work to the advantage of recipients. There are many policies that, in our view, are inadequate and need changes or revisions; this is why we decided to write a brief concerning some key policies which must be modified.
Our brief, entitled “Proposed Modifications Regarding Social Assistance Policies” was submitted to the Minister of Social Development and to the Committee on Social Assistance Reform. It focuses on nine different issues which we feel require extensive revision by the Social Policy Revision Committee. We have analyzed each of these policies, explained why they are inadequate, and have formulated recommendations for changes in order to ensure better security and improved lifestyles for those living on social assistance.
On May 25, 2011, we met with the Deputy Minister of Social Development and the two Co-Chairs of the Social Policy Revision Committee and presented our brief to them, along with our recommendations. We also forwarded a copy of the document, including the recommendations, to the Hon. Susan Stultz, Minister of Social Development.
