The Charlotte Street Arts Centre (CSAC) received its first private donation from Fredericton resident Pam MacDonald, to support the completion of the Culture Garden project. The project, officially launched in 2009 as a Cultural Capitals of Canada initiative, has been further supported with a new infusion of funding assistance from the City of Fredericton this year.
The Culture Garden, which is set to officially open in August, will span CSAC’s backyard and will provide a space for arts, culture and community events, local gardeners, and installations from CSAC’s Artists-in-Residence for years to come.
“The Culture Garden will not only revitalize a community space, but also, through our ongoing acquisition of outdoor installation art, support the City of Fredericton in its mandate to promote more public sculpture. At present, the Culture Garden offers the only designated outdoor installation space in the province. Outdoor installation art is distinct from other public sculpture in that an artist works exclusively within the space to create something that draws upon and responds to the immediate environment,” says WhiteFeather, Executive Director at Fredericton Arts & Learning.
Backyard Betty Design, a local landscape design company, will lead the Culture Garden project with assistance from community volunteers. Kara Doucet, the founder of BBD, recently opened her business in Fredericton with the mandate of not just creating first-rate landscape designs, but also teaching clients how to sustain these efforts.
